Chinatown - Chinese New Year 2004

The stuff they auction in these places is amazing. I watched a man bid for an win a huge golden buddha statue for the princely sum of $45. Everything is gold and gaudy. Yet everything is magical. Folding chairs in rows, 2 auctioneers with industrial fans helping them to keep their cool. The lilting sounds of the chinese singing contest waft through the background hum. Incence both excites the senses and stings the eyes. Fruit of all colours shapes and sizes get pinched and prodded and purchased. Pussy Willow breaks out its silvery heads on long mahogany stalks waiting to become fluffy. Oranges and Mandarins pile themselves high. Chinese New Year is a hive of activity, of sights sounds and smells.
