I got up early this morning because the room of people (who I had yet to even see if not meet due to the room being in total darkness from my arrival at Allessandro Downtown Hostel) all got up, russled lots and generally started the day for me.
Allena and I had decided to hit the Vatican so after a bit of organising and for me unpacking my bits and pieces we set off.
A couple of metro tickets later and my first experience of the colourful Roman subways we arrived at Vatican City.
Already (10.30 am) the queues for St Peters and the Museum were horrendously long.
We walked around St Peters Basillica, took photos and deferred the rest til "later". Instead we headed for the Castile St Angelo which was absolutely amazing. Inside there were so many beautiful and extremely old frescoes and a particularly excellent Statue of the Archangel Michael complete with awesome bronze wings (see my picture).
The views across the river Tiber were spectacular with the haze over Rome only completing the effect.
We walked back through the old town and every turn seemed to have us finding a treasure of some sort. A fabulous and very Italian Deli was lunch. With Italians almost screaming their orders around us we finally got to get two huge slices of Pizza fresh from the oven and set back out into the street munching away. The Pantheon, Piazza Navonna (which I choose to call Stinky Piazza), Teatro Marcello, the ruins in what was the Jewish Ghetto, The Forum, The Collosseum.... so many things to see and we walked around all of them. Today only from the outside but even that is so very very impressive. It surprised me firstly how Grand and BIG everything is but also how tightly packed in it all seems to be. It amazes me how they get those impressive shots in all the guide books with the monuments being so closely surrounded by other buildings.
