I'm here in SF
New York done and now I'm another 3 hours earlier and more jet lagged in San Fran So with all the jet lag and without being able to fall asleep, (I was watching "I love 1982" on VH1 till all hours.... remember Joannie loves Chachi eek... it was a "remember all the crap from that year" show) I stillI managed to get up, get mobile, avoid the "streets I shouldn't walk on" and headed to the civic centre. A new Gallery has opened here, The gallery of Asian art. I made it through the doors, through security, got the brochure and then decided not to stay. $10 US to see what I get back at home didn't really appeal to me. I walked eastwards towards Market street. There are so many homeless people here. Its such a shame. It really is quite a beautiful city but its blighted with so much poverty and insanity ( I mean really, insanity). Still I took loads of shots and then found myself at Sony Metreon ( just like Sony Style only much much bigger and the Yerba Buena Gardens. The cherry blossoms were out and the locals were reveling in the sundhine. Being quite a protected area the wind was less fierce than the wind tunnel that is Market Street and some locals were even sleeping in the mid morning sun.
On the other side of the square, on 3rd street is SFMOMA. I started my day there with lunch/brunch in the cafe. Great coffee, a foccacia and my guidebook in the sun. Once inside it was the artistic highlight of my trip so far (and thats a big call). What an excellent collection. It was also amazing to see some of the exhibitions I had already seen. Irving Penn's earthly nudes that i saw at the Stockholm Dansmuseet, loads of Andre Gusky images that I had previously seen in both the Hamburger barnhoff, Berlin, and the Tate Modern in London. The study for squares by (damn forgotten his name) that I had seen the rest of and the completed square paintings at the Guggenheim. It was great. I spent hours and hours in there. I was itching so hard to tke pictures, But the place was crawling with guards. Damn.
I strongly recommend visiting it if you can.... make it the SF first stop.
